Jewelry as a Work of Art
The Hopi and Max Ernst

In this conversation Paola Stroppiana, art historian and scholar of jewelry by artists, talks with Eliana Negroni, contemporary jewelry curator, about her recent essay written on the occasion of Max Ernst’s retrospective held at Palazzo Reale in Milan last spring.

Her last research reveals deep cultural connections between the gold masks-sculptures in Max Ernst’s jewelry production and the Hopi’s Katchina dolls style.

This topic offers a broad overview on the history of artist jewelery from the first half of the 20th century on the international scene up to the new research from the early 2000s.

From Alberto Giacometti to Anish Kapoor, from Pablo Picasso to Lucio Fontana, from Niki de Saint Phalle to Joana Vasconcelos, jewelry by artists reveals the extraordinary ability to translate their creativity into wearable art
